Illustration of the Month 02: Dance of the flowers

Postby Chaklet_Cookiee » Mon May 19, 2014 1:40 am

So, here I am with the new topic! I was thinking a lot last few days about what should the topic be and then this came to my mind. Whether it will be sci-fi oriented illustration or fantasy, it's up to you. (It would be interesting to see it sci-fi-sh, hweh). I guess, many of you have read fairytales of Hans Christian Andersen or someone have read them for you as children. "Little Ida's flowers" inspired me for this month and I hope it would do the same with you, guys!

Deadline: Wednesday, June 18th
Vote begins: Friday, June 19th

The goal is here to make an illustration that would be fit for a card game, magazine or book cover, film or video game pitch. It should be well rendered, easy to read, clearly communicated, exciting to look at.

Guidelines and Rules:
- Post sketches and steps as you go so other people can both learn from you and give you feedback.
- Try working in a process like you would with a client. Do rough ideas, then a proper sketch (or the equivalent thereof), color mood sketches, etc. Post them all!
- Once finals thread is up, post your final image there and link to the steps and sketches.

Just in case, if anyone hasn't read it before - this link will be useful:

Just to be clear. Do you want us to do an illustration using Hans Christian Andersen's book as a brief?

As I wrote you can use it as an inspiration but you can do anything related to "Dance of the flowers".

This sounds like fun! I hope more people will join in. :) I'll try to get something done..

(It would be interesting to see it sci-fi-sh, hweh)

Challenge accepted!

"Dance of the flowers" made me think of the flowers singing in Disney's Alice in Wonderland. I kept associating
and somehow Contact (that movie with Jodie Foster) jumped to my mind. I realized that there are parallels
between the two movies and I think they could be combined. Both are stories of little girls (supposedly) dreaming of
unknown places etc.

So I will be aiming at a cross over between Alice in Wonderland and Contact...

My biggest problem at the moment is how to show the flowers actually dancing without the whole thing
becoming too cartoonish. (I'd like to have a rather realistic feel in the final piece)
I'm going to work on composition and color thumbnails, as soon as I figured out a solution for this "dancing" problem.

I need to train on my composition, colour and satuff and this is the best way to use what I learned to far (even though I'm still a noob lol)

Well? Why is nobody posting? I wasn't gonna participate, because of my low skill level, but I guess I can't lose if I'm the only participant...
I feel like I'm missing something. Seriously though why and how did this die out so quickly?

hi there, i think ill try to join this challange, so ive decided to try some small B/W thumbnails just to get some ideas or general concept (and not really ment for composition at the moment.)

1- a tribal guy\girl with plants\flower "dances" (running) his way to kill the intruders to the forest who are shooting at him\her.
2- some little goblins dancing around the fire or in some other location with flowers outfit.
3- 2 ballerinas in an interesting composition, kind of fish-eyed
4- sci-fi! though im not sure totally fits- suposed to be a fleet of flower like spaceships who use solar sails.
5- just random flower ppl walking\dancing while their going through the forest
6 - kind of the same concept as number 1
7- huge snake like meat eating huge flower fighting a knight
8- same concept of huge meat eating flower
9- a monster with flower-like tenticles, trying to avoid a bunny\ animal eating it (but this one resembles too much to one of Bobby chiu's consept paintings so i feel like i cant take credit for this one, but its here still :P )

really wana try number 1 because ive been practicing gestures latly and i raelly enjoy getting a nice powerful pose but i think some other thumbs could be developed to a nice pic.
what do you think? :] (they might not be totally clear visually right now)

I'm sorry guys, a lot of things are going on right now and I wasn't able to finish the image in time. I still want to finish it instead of going back on my words, so finish it I will (try).
