Hey guys, my names Eric. I'm 26 years old and in need of serious critiquing. My dream is to become a conceptual designer/ freelance illustrator. I'll be posting my entrance portfolio to Art Center in the days to come, so feel free to be harsh on where I need to improve, don't be modest or shy in your comments or critiques, I want you guys to be as honest as possible:) so to start, here are some of newer sketches.

i really like the forms on the skeleton mage. i would crop the composition tho. at left there is too much empty space(negative space). since the value composition of the mage are kinda like long stripe, it would be benefit to have that left space kinda elongated too. if it s a card, maybe you can just make the mage larger, or add some kind of tree like in the background.
for the dragon picture, use more core shadow and generally more darks.
heads are kinda flat. define more core shadow. values of skin in light are generally something between 4 and 5. try make a value scale with pencil from 1to 10. identifying values is important. nice structure btw. hope i wasnt too harsh : D you can do it ^_^

Hai- Dude, thank you so much for that, everywhere else I post I get asspats. I already love this site lol. And no, not to harsh at all, you were very straight forward with where I need to improve and appreciate that so much.
maelstrm- thanks man, I actually thought it was my weakest attribute lol.
sachsapne- thanks, and you are totally right on both counts.

Some really cool concepts here, real fun sketchbook to scroll through! Good control of colour too :) I think you should do more sketching with just a pencil though, because they seem to be your weaker posts... the proportions are off more often and they just don't seem up to the same standard as your digital work. But that's the only thing I can think to crit :) Keep things coming, I'm looking forward to more!

Ink-insomnia- Thanks for the reply, and whats funny is that a few months back someone on another forum said the exact opposite, so I spent a lot more time with my digital work lol. I guess I'll have to find a happy median between both:D Thanks again.

Don't really like posting stuff a little older than a few months, but this to show just how unproductive I've been and hopefully it'll get me off my ass and study. As you all can see, I still have a LONG LONG LONG way to go lol. Now for the update;)

Hey I really like your stuff! I think the one thing you might benefit from is taking some things to finish, like really finished. You'll understand technical things a bit better, but mostly it'll help you understand your process and how to make things more efficiently.

These are total crap. Especially the guys face upper right lol. Tried to add some more value in order to get my sketches to not look so flat, but I failed miserably lol. Guess this means I need to get off my ass and study more:D

I'm such a rebel I'm going to have to trespass onto your sketchbook.

The one thing I'm noting as I'm going through your sketchbook and your DA is that most of what you do are sketches and unfinished work that could be pushed further. How often do you take a piece to finish? Perhaps I am only noticing this because I also have the same problem but I would like to see how far you could push a piece.

You have a very interesting imagination. Would love to see more from you.

so many nice sketches and ideas!! I also love the colors you use in your pieces. But like a few people already mentioned, it would be cool to see them finished. Oh and those sketchup models look very cool. I dont see much actual area perspective in your works though, do you do those as well?

Your colour looks like you depend alot on the eyedropper. What I mean by that is that, for example, once you pick a blue for mountains and whenever you need to get back to your mountains, or detail them further or whatever; you resort to using the same, surgically colour-picked blue. Try mixing your colours anew as much as possible. You will develop eye for colour faster, not to mention that you'll introduce some temperature shifts, hue transitions and other incidental nice things.

You have some really nice works there, and you're definitively doing good in the colour department but your edges could do some work. Hope this helps and keep drawing! : )

Enydimon- I knew I should have put a no trespass sign up lol XD. That's something I have not done in a while, but I'll definitely be posting some finished pieces soon. Thanks for the input:)
Venomisia- Thank you, I do perspective sketches in my sketchbook from time to time, I guess I should paint some up, or do some in photoshop.
mathew- Thanks man, really appreciate you stopping by, and you're kidding right lol, me... inspiring? I wish I had as much brush control as you do.
Luna- Push things further, got it :D Thanks.
MJMungus- You are awesome man, thanks so much for that, I knew I had been doing something wrong, so that's why I'm going to be doing a lot of still lifes from now on, as well as plenty of photo studies, no eyedroppering of course lol. Thanks again dude XD
HEATS- I suck in all departments of painting, DAMN YOU EDGES, DAAAMMN YOU!!!!! Haha, will definitely make a major effort to right the wrong that is my edges;)
Hai- YES YES!!!, but there is still improvement to be had. Thanks again Hai:D

Well guys and gals, in order to work on my horrendous color and edges and everything else I'm flaking on, here is a poorly executed still life that I was going to finish tonight until I knocked it off of the table :( It had perspective issues anyway. Will try to post one or two still lifes each time I post from now on. Also a photo study, tried to work on edges and color in this, actually learned quite a bit about photographic color. But I think I'll learn more from studying from life, so I'll do more of those....hopefully. You guys keep on my ass if I don't come through with my promise here XD

the portrait looks really solid!! i think you can improve it(and the still life) by using appropriate brushes for your needs. what i did is downloading the brush set of jamie jones and yun ling. then when doing studies, i look at all the brushes and the stroke it would give me in the brush navigator at the same time and decide which one would give me the correct result in terms of edges and diameter. it would give you a more controlled process instead of hard edge->blendblendblend and avoid a "oh, i have to paint around the shape to get the right shape". i did it for years. and to be serious, it sucks. LOL.
i know doing studies seperate only to train fundamentals can be a bit disconnecting sometimes. maybe do studies for fundamentals, and also do studies for personal pieces? i´m still trying to figure that out myself at the moment, haha.

Dude, nice pencils, and that first painting has some real boss potential too it!

I like what I see of the sketchup stuff too!

Your stuff reminds me of codakromek. He was an old CA.org'er, his real name is tony Iammarino is you wanna google him. Wicked color sense on that guys stuff.

Keep it up man, even if you're the older end of things. Post more!

matt- Thanks so much for the boost man, and I suppose you're right lol.
Hai- Thanks man, I noticed that as well, and was thinking of ways around it. I think I've got some of those brushes already lol.
Joel- Now that's a compliment man, I really enjoyed looking through his SB over there, I love the expression in each of his sketches:D

Here's what Ive got for today, wanted to work on my problem with confusing brush strokes, so I stuck with the hard round brush mainly with a little airbrush in some areas. Learned a lot from doing this, and will probably keep this method as my starting method from now on or until I find a better way lol. 2- 1hr still life, 1- 1.5hr still life and a photo study in its earlier stages. Will try to push that one a lot further.

I..don't really have a lot to say! But I really like the still lives you're doing. I keep telling myself I should do that but I always come with reasons not to "it's too boring! " "I haven't realy set one up" ..etc lots of excuses. Seeing your Rubix Cube on top of a phone(?) really robs me of my excuses! Now I have to do them!
