Wow man, absolutely killing it with the atelier drawings. They're so clean and disciplined, and I can see the Dorien Iten ref pose in there as well :) GG man, hope you get some great information to bring back to the forums from the atelier :D

@Stresscavity - Good seeing you Stress! Such a long time ago. Thanks! Yeah I totally agree. The thing is though here at the atelier I work with school studies for almost 12 hours a day, so there's not much room for personal stuff during the weekdays. If I'm on schedule with everything I can cram something in during the weekends. It's basically during lunch hour that I can actually draw personal stuff, been mostly inktober rubbish but yeah. Keep crunchin' man, good seeing you!

@Zombie from the moon - Haha studies may get slightly better as I go, my observational skill improves. That's not the most important part though, I gotta apply everything. The school and the studies are still so new to me and all the schoolwork is so overwhelming that I can't really think about that as much as I would like to. I think it's inevitable to NOT improve as you study at a place like this, subconciously something always happens I'd like to think, or else you're doing something horribly wrong. The only master copy I posted here was a Charles Bargue one, that was 2 hours. Glad you find it inspiring :D! Keep on goin' Zombie!

@BluePup - Hey Blue, thanks! They're just studies, nothing special really. It's just about spending a lot of time and eye-energy to copy lines from another drawing, on to another paper. Makes you see shiiiz! Hehe I don't know, what do you want to know? The information that I so far has gathered from the atelier is basically one word: workworkworkworkworkworkworkworkkkkkkkkkk. Do a ton of shitty drawings - Get better eventually. That's how it is. Learning by doing. They're really REALLY pushing us to draw from imagination as much as we can. I guess it's okay to paint still lifes and draw casts and rely of references for the rest of your life, if that's what you want. I'm prettys ure though however that many of us have other plans, so do both a shitloads of studies and a shitloads of imagination stuff. If you find something uninteresting, make it interesting. That's the only way we'll survive really. Study things that you know you'll benefit from.

More stuff, boooring batch. Been such a intense week, made so many of these in just a few days. On monday we're supposed to start a long pose with a live model, and if you aren't done with all of your figure bargues until then you're not allowed in to the model room. That's a quest right there! RPG-elements helps out a lot.

Latest sketch turned into something very experimental but fun. Tried some mixer brush, it's still such a mystery tool.

** EDIT ** After your comment inkem I actually realized I do have a few quick figure drawings. We have figure drawing every friday!

Your pencils are on fire, those angles and clear weight distribution *u*. Do you ever miss doing short gestures? Idk if they do them at the atelier. Regardless it seems like you're having a great time there, you must be tired after drawing 12hrs every day :P.

Man those lines are looking so tasty. I've been wanting to just do a 100 figure lay ins and this is getting me excited for that, haha.

12 hour study days sounds pretty hardcore. Must be a great environment for that, though. Kind of wish I had access to an atelier.

Keep us updated! Should be fun to see where you end up next year.

@Inkem - thanks man! We have short studies every friday, and a long pose during thursday evenings. I'm having the time of my life dude, it's everything what I wished for. : D Yeah you get pretty exhausted, and it becomes your life. love it!

@Enydimon - Hey, if you wanna do it, do it! :D Gotta start some day, why not today? Lets both get ridiculously good and provide this world with amazing art. Yeah Ateliers are so pricy unfortunately, i'll be in debt for the rest of my life after this. #yolo! You too man, keep crunching and grinding!

Update on the illustration as well as a sargent study. Happy how the illustration turns out.

Yeah I should probably just get started on it now. I was trying to focus mainly on heads for a bit but might as well cram it in now since 100 is gonna take a while.

That illustration is coming along well. BTW, I've been curious about this for a while and excuse the poor description, but which brush makes those strokes that look a bit like tire marks? I've seen it around for a year in various forms, and I'm sure one of my packs has it somewhere, but I have no idea what it is and it's been bugging me for ages, haha. In any case, looks like it's working out for you.

Ooo baby, those line weights in the shorter ones. I like the focus on accuracy, everything looks natural. Its a nice change from the exaggerated short poses I see and do myself.

I wasn't sure how that peice was gonna turn out, but with the update I love the sinster mood of the cat piece. Btw do you ever use line drawings or rough lay ins to start your paintings?

12 hours a day at an atelier, that sounds awesome (and terrifying)! Those super long Bargue drawings look like an excellent exercise in patience, though.
It's good to see that you are also fitting in some personal paintings and studies in your off-time.
I'm sorry I don't have more critiques to offer but your work is looking wonderful, I hope to see more soon!

@Crankshaft - Thanks Crank! Hopefully! ;)

@Enydimon - Get started if you haven't already. Unless you have really important things to do, which people have, then try and cram it in there. I find myself justifying some slackiness now and then by saying that I did work some. I think it's fun to set a challenge like that and just force yourself to do it. Good way to stay productive! I thiiink i got it from Wangjie Lie's brush pack, i'm not entirely sure. I think I know which one you mean haha. Check his brushes out, you might find something in there. (Among with other goodies of course)

@Inkem - Thanks Ink! Those poses are like 2-3 hours each, more or less. Had to copy bargue's lines to the best of our ability. :( I wanna be looser! Glad you like the cat piece :D. Linedrawings as in doing a solid line drawing for everything in the image? Rarely. I find it easier to mess around with composition if I start blocking stuff in pretty early on. Feels like I'm limiting myself if I spend a long time with a line drawing. Sure I might make a rough sketch, and then clean it up and then proceed from there, but normally I don't really put down more lines than I actually need. (Digitally, in traditional media i'm the opposite, sadly!) :(

@Aestechnics - 12 Hours sounds hardcore like hell but there are breaks as in ping-pong matches and lunch involved haha, don't worry. I'm so happy I'm getting to do the bargue drawings. At first they seem dull, boring, a waste of time. They train your eyes extremely well, they let you abstractify complicated shapes into more simple ones, they teach you how to render with a pencil. Maybe most importantly they teaches you all about patience, and the insanity of rushing something and ending up with a bad product and having to start over. We've basically been at the school for two months, and everyone can agree on that everyones observational skills have improved quite a bit. About personal stuff, I do try and do that as much as possible. A nightmare of mine is to basically finish my studies at the school, without applying anything to my personal stuff. Erghh *shivers*!

Been a while! Busy busy! finished my figure bargues, been drawing with a live model every day now since last post. No photos of them though, sorry. Just feels like a real hassle taking a hundred images each day just to post here. I might take photos of them in time, and just post a shitload of them. Idk. I was actually considering not posting on here nor conceptart for a year, could be an interesting challenge. Feels kinda good though being a part of a community like this.

Thanks man, I think I found the brush or brush type I was looking for. Really cool artist and some nice stuff in the pack, awesome. I haven't gotten started on the lay-ins but I might as well at least work on them while I get through everything else.

I don't have much in the way of crit to offer you atm, but it looks like you're making some good gains anyhow. Really seems like things are paying off for you. Digging the updates.

Great sketchbook! I hope you will keep updating this, as I love seeing your atelier progress. Don't really have the possibility to study at atelier but i'm really interested in that kind of training. I actually did bargue plate 1 at home but it's hard to do this without anyone telling if im doing it right or wrong and who would keep pushing me to work on it. I see you started from more advanced plates though? Is this latest one in pencils also still? Keep up the training and updates hopefully :)

Hey Uriamu, great work on the self-portrait.
On first look i thought it needed more value contrast. But it works just great how it is.
You've managed too show subtle plane changes despite the dim lighting. Hope you'll post again soon.

@Satu - Thanks Satu! I'll update it occasionally, don't worry! ;) Studying at an atelier is great, it's hard though to keep up the leveling curve with your imagination work. You have to remind yourself that it takes time, and it's okay. I stressed out A LOT over it just a few weeks ago when I realized this. We did simple bargue plates in the beginning, never took an image of it I think but it was a simple profile of a bearded man. The one in the previous batch is graphite, I just recently finished my charcoal bargue. Instead of taking 2 months, it took me 2 weeks. Charcoal! <3 Take care!

@Matthias Hausmann - Heya! :) Thanks! I got the same crits from another guy actually! Will take an extra look at that next time. ;)

@Hai - haiiiii! Uhm, the quick gesture drawings you see up there is a model the atelier hires. We have model drawing every day. Just realized i never show that stuff. The tuition fee is expensive enough, I certainly can't afford hiring them myself hehe! Cheers man.

STUFF -! Finished charcoal bargue, i'm SO breaking up with Charles Bargue for now. Was allowed in to play with the big boys in the cast room, (woho!) which is a lot more exciting. Other than that, just random stuff for different classes and stupid digital paintings... :|

Keep crunchin'!

Awesome studies!
Unbelievable. Especially like your quick imaginative pictures with skulls for some reason.
I had some questions regarding the method though.
Looking at the image with three heads I noticed that the rendering method is a bit similar to the one Miles Johnston used. And he used to study at the same atelier, so that made me thinking that some of the things I see are the result of training method used there imprinting on you. The thing is, while everyone who gets good (like you) does a shitton of stuff, stuff is usually different from dude to dude. Atelier uses a lot of Bargues and that's probably what causes similar shifts in the styles of artists. Can't really pinpoint them though, just a feeling. So I wanted to know the exact program of the atelier: how many cast copies do you do, how much time? Are the figures you showed all the figure copies you're supposed to do or were there some more? Because there's a ton of them in the cours de dessin book. I'm also interested in the entire program. For example I don't see much paintings from there. Does that mean that at the beginning the program is focused on drawing and teaching to see the form without painting?
While I plan to do Bargue copies to help myself start working slowly and accurately, I know that establishing program and deciding what do I do and in what order is up to myself. Those questions are more out of curiosity than anything else, so if you don't have time I'll understand.

@Rewitan - Ohoo thanks! Nice long post! About the three heads, I can see why someone would say that yes. Miles is a good friend of mine since I started at Swedish Academy, he's currently our teacher and an artist in residence. What a guy. :P He made me like graphite at a whole new level. So I guess I'm pretty influenced by his rendering method, but it doesn't nearly look as good of course haha... Our teachers want us to have some kind of own style, I mean who wouldn't want that upon their students. An own style that motivates and makes what you do, exciting for you. But in terms of the studies, ESPECIALLY with bargue drawing, we're being told to copy exactly what we see, and forget about our style for a bit. After all they're just assignments and not intended to be works of art in that sense. The style comes back once you get in to charcoal, cast drawing and doing the model. I only did 15 figure bargues, I'm not sure if I uploaded them all. I think I did! The education is three years, the first year you only get to work with graphite and charcoal. There's a bunch of stuff you have to do in order to start painting, if you manage to finish all the assignments for the first year before you start your second, I'm sure you'll start to paint. Hope I answered some of your questions! ;D

Okay. Imagination skills are laaacking. I'll fix it, be patient and learn from it.

Just dropped by to say those figure drawings are looking beautiful!! The only thing I can say as far as critique is that sometimes your digital work feels lacking in hard edges. Might be cool to switch up that edge sometimes and get really crispy with it. Keep up the cool work!

@Luna - Thanks gurl! :D Glad u like it!

@Caseylarae - Hells yeah! Thanks a lot for the crit, edges is something I think about, but I in general go overboard with softening things out way too much. There's nothing better than nice balance between clean cut edges and fuzzy goozy fuss!

Thought i'd upload the updated version of the photo study.

Dude... totaly nailed that portrait :]
Also fan of your atelier drawings, solid stuff. Your sketchbook always reminds me how important a good base drawing is, I need work more on my linedrawing ability.
Btw for how long are you still going there, seems like it consumes all of your free time. Just wondering what are your plans for personal stuff :D

Your latest work is gorgeous! Makes me get out of the house and run to an atelier to study as soon as possible.
And you've added in that hard edge contrast Casey suggested in your updated photo study, which is great. Looking forward to seeing what you post next :D

@Edm - Thanks! :D A good base in drawing and observation is essential. Draw a lot from life, I could not stress that more. Right now, I don't work on anything personal digitally, i just can't be bothered... Just don't feel like it. I do carry around a sketchbook however that I usually sketch in, pretty ugly stuff but I'll see if I can upload them.. :P *walk of shame* Only been at the school for a little more than half a year, so I got a little more than two years left. sweeeeeet

@Aestechnics - Dooo eeeet! :D So much fun! Thanks for the kinds words and encouragement, will get back to it!

@Crowbit - Crowbie! Haha I swear I'm nowhere close to being a machine... Kim Jung Gi, Craig Mullins and James Jean! Now we be talkin' machines bruhhh! Good seeing you! Stay busy! ;)

Just stuff. ..................
