Hey permanoobs, sorry for my disappearance.

I need srs butt kicking.

I have been wanting to draw more faces so here's my 2nd attempt at a value study after watching Scott K's studies on youtube. (It is also Kim Noorda, her face is perf. )Also tried out his brushes, I feel like I'm understanding workflows better. My 1st attempt actually started with a reference of a white guy and along the way he became black (???) Serious constructive issues there.

I hope the image sizes are better now :D

yeh these brushes are nice. The face construction looks good to me. I can see how it would come across as stylized but it looks good all the same. Like an illustration style. nice job on the second one. you have some values and rendering going on in the shadows. You could easly spend more time on these to refine the studies more.

Today's work. Not much here today. Children face studies & 2 minute gestures. I still have to do way more face studies and construction especially.

Hey ya!

You mention your portraits turning a bit too "desaturated" but whats happening is that there is no color variation within your tones
If the lights are slightly warm, make the shadows slightly cold(or vice versa)
skin that turns from dark to light you cant simply blend the two tones together, there must be a 3rd tone in between them value wise, but more saturated.
lastly, avoid making the backgroun the same hue as the skin tone.

you are on the right track overall tho! keep working hard.
if you want some good reads. James gurneys Color and Light is a fantastic place to start.

Hello Natalie. Thank you for your comment. I think you should try to be more confident with your mark making.. I know it's difficult but if you try hard to plan even this better, it will help you in the long run with all your art. Confidence is important too :D. I think you should try more gestures because it's whats helping me a lot right now

Damn, you've been busy. Even though it looks like you just came back to your SB after a little more than a year, I can tell you haven't been slacking :D.

Marks are looking way more confident, and your volume of studies is paying off in regards to construction and fluidity. I don't have any crit this time, but I'd definitely like to see more.

Oooh, the sketches in the first page are really nice.

The images of those portraits are kinda small, so it's a bit hard to tell, but you could work a bit more on your value separations as to avoid that muddy look in shadows. Look up the 'color zones of the face' up on Google, and that will be able to give you some good results to reference. :]
