Laura García's sketchbook: harsh critiques welcome (please )

Postby laugart » Fri Apr 18, 2014 4:15 am

Hi everyone! I'm so excited by this new forum, it's exactly what I was waiting for (thanks algenpfleger!)
so, my name is Laura and I'm from Madrid. what I want is to be a professional artist, I don't really see me doing anything else. But at the moment I'm studying physics u_U . So I don't really have much time. next year I'll finish my degree and I hope to be able to study art full-time.
I really lack knowledge of the basics, wich is what I'm going to center on for the next months. for now, some old things!
I'll try to upload more recents studies later today.

Some pencil work! Decided it wasnt worth it to scan them. First studies, then some heads from imagination.

I would say focus on drawing, lots of drawing with an emphasis on construction to nail down those forms. You already have a good grasp of things, so keep going!

Jaikamat thanks for passing by! You are right, probably my stuff from imagination would benefit a lot from construction studies, will do.

Some studies from today, mostly legs

More sketches from yesterday, plus an older drawing in one of the pages (from ...6 years ago, I think. I didnt use paper to its full potential back then..Im filling those pages with studies nowadays.)
Also, some dress studies from this morning, trying to build a bigger visual library, my sketches from imagination suck. Now, Im off to study electromagnetism. Hope I survive.

Looking good :). Your pencil drawings might benefit from more confident lines though. At the moment some areas look a little scratchy, so maybe slow it down and focus on longer, smoother strokes. Working in pen sometimes helps as well, up to you though. Keep it coming :)

nice faces laura! and welcome! legs are looknig pretty good too.

you're not scared of backgrounds are you? all your figures up there are just on a flat color. paint some sceneries! some classrooms, gardens, forests, meadows. it's easy to get stuck in the portrait alley otherwise and you don't want that! i'd also like to see you do some construction practice - boxes in perspective, easy geometric shapes, then simple houses and vehicles, always paying attention to the vanishing points and proper spatiality. it will melt your brain at first but you'll learn so much!

keep at it!

JakeB I'll try doing it in pen, sure it will make me think more about what I'm doing. thanks for the advice! :)

algenpfleger I am in fact scared of backgrounds u_u I've been doing some perspective practice since you told me, but nothing even worth showing yet... I'll get there. I don't want to get stuck in that alley, no no. thanks for the comment!!

so, I don't have much to show sadly. Between the two exams I had this week and that I have pages just full of crappy lines and weird cube-things for perspective practice that I just think are not mentioning showing...

But, some studies and lips from imagination after them. I have some more stuff from imagination I'll scan later.

i suggest starting already with the fundamentals even if its just a bit, so when you have the free time its gonna be more easy to get out of faces, you know? basic stuff is what will give your faces the pro look, everything influences the rest, even faces have perspective!!! hope to see more from you

y madrileña eh XD estuve viviendo como diez años en madrid (pinto) hecho de menos el circulo de bellas artes agh.

Very nice portraits and I'm really jealous of your leg studies! I've been working on them too lately but they almost invariably end up looking wonky. ;) I need to do tons more!

My only suggestion for your painted work is that it would benefit from sharper outlines. Your faces are very nicely rendered, but they would look so much more defined if you cleaned up transitions between face/hair, or hair/background. You could give it a try by going over these with a 100% opacity hard pointed brush. :)

Ditto for your very last study: it's got a lovely sfumatto effect, but adding some hard edges, say, in the corner of the lips and outlines of the nostrils, it would just pop out.

buxu it's really boring stuff to show yet, I guess, but I have started with perspective already. I can already see how it relates, I can feel my portraits improving too. Me quiero apuntar al circulo en cuanto acabe el curso, para ir a los talleres de dibujo con modelo. tengo muchas ganas :)

eilidh thank you! yeah, just do lots of them, it's the only way
you are right about that study, and I will do that, thanks for the advice :)

sushy don't worry, I've been doing more things lately :) thank you!

so... I've been drawing a lot, but I hsve to scan it, so not much to show. My hand hurts, a lot. I'm afraid it's something serious... crap.
so I won't be finishing the character of the week, and no more drawing till I get better. I'll read and watch videos, so I can still learn something for the time.
digi stuff. not much. I know. I really like the color studies, they are fun!

a couple of value studies done with my left hand. really frustrating. But I'm going to do lots of these, I really need to study value, I'm a disaster.

the hand still hurts. I guess it needs time and rest, but to be honest I'm a bit scared about it.

long time without posting! I had exams, and my hand still hurt (is more or less ok now) so for a long time I couldn´t do anything. Now I still have to study for september, but there's more time for drawing. Also I wont have any social life this summer because all of my friends are emigrating to germany, so... lots of drawing I hope

My scan doesn't work, I'll take pics of the anatomy studies some day, for now, color studies. I need to do hundreds of these. colors are still a mistery.

Hey Laura, nice SB! :) But you need to update it more. I've gone too long between updates myself, though, LOL. I know what you mean about trying to balance academic stuff and drawing, not so easy sometimes. But I think you can do it. Are you planning on having drawing mainly as something for yourself, or are you interested in it as a career?

Anyway, on the to the drawings themselves. You are doing good studies here, keep it up! You need to work on you line quality a bit, though. You are a bit chicken-scratchy right now. It's easy to fall into that when you are trying to draw accurately, but you really want to make smooth confident strokes rather than hairy uncertain ones. It helps to use your whole arm to draw, and not just your wrist.

This sounds awkward, but I like way you draw boobs. :D A lot of guys fall into drawing pneumatic breasts, perhaps though a combination of A. not seeing real ones as much and B. unrealistic fantasy art portrayals of the female figure. I guess having real ones helps, LOL. One thing I'm noticing with your imagination figures above, though, is that the head is bigger in relation to the body than a real person. Are they children? It's a little confusing to me, and a bunch of your figures do not have those proportions so I'm not sure if that is what you are going for. Also in regards to anatomy, some of your figures have messed up proportions with their limbs. Watch out for that.

Anyway, you are making good progress so just keep it up! :) I'm looking forward to seeing more. Mistakes are the signposts to success so you are doing it right.

thanks, Christopher!! yeah, you are right, I need to be more consistent, hopefully I will from now on. I would like to have it as a career, but I know I am a long way from being there, and I'm already 23. sigh.
On my defense, the scanner and the making the pics small enough messed them up a bit, they do not look that scratchy, but still more than they should. working on that :)
haha, thanks for that, surely it has to help having them, at least they will remain fairly realistic xD
proportions is one of my biggest troubles with anatomy. I just can't get them right, don't really know how to make them better. practice and more practice, I guess. I'm going to start going to live drawings sessions soon, hope that will help. thanks so much for taking the time to comment :)

so, not so much for today. still trying to make "real" stuff so I can see more clearly where the biggest problems are (everywhere)

I like your hands but your bodies look a little stiff and I think the proportions are a bit off.

I think doing tons of gesture drawings from both life and imagination could help a lot

PartySnack: thanks about the hands, real struggle there :) yeah, proportions are the worst right now, I will try to make them better this next week.

so, a poster I designed for a contest for my old school, ended up second u.u, a study just trying to get value right (the face is a mess) an environment study and direct application from memory.
