Alright crank you asked for it. Aside from the cushart study and the feet studies these are all imagination.

Oops forgot to upload. 70% is from imagination, rest is just studying building up my visual library. My goal is to train myself to work well without reference since I think it will free me up. Allow me to express my ideas and visions more accurately without having to constantly look up reference. There are a lot of artists who are capable of this( Kim Jung gi, Sinix, Hotararc, to name a few) so I figured I'll do the same. Been mostly working on posing. Leg anatomy is on my study list next so I'll update that when I get the chance.

Moe wrote:Your animations are really nice, makes me wanna do some too. What software are you using for your animations? Also, you have some pretty solid form and construction skills. I also see you draw a lot of boxes and cylinders. What resources did you use for learning perspective?

@Moe
Sorry for a late reply to your post in my sketchbook, so I reply directly here.
I disappear from the internet from time to time due to time and other issues.

For the somewhat recent animations, they were done in CLIP Studio Paint.
However, I do not think the choice of software will matter without a dedicated workflow.
There just needs a controllable timeline, "onion skin", and the ability to put all the frames together.
Technically those are "unnecessary" too, but will save time and are good help always.
Other popular options: Krita, OpenToonz, Adobe Animate (used to be Flash), TVPaint, Photoshop

Rather than software, traditional has a lot of benefits as well because of inherent differences with digital.
In that case: Lighttable, pegbar, animation paper, pencil, eraser, and maybe a ruler.
Various makeshift solutions for a lighttable exist but I do not know of them since I bought one.
Although it is "unnecessary" in a similar way to the timeline/"onion skin".
A metal clip with printer paper can be a makeshift solution for the pegbar and animation paper.

These are the resources which I would consider had been the most helpful for me in learning perspective.
Though intuitive sense of perspective is worked and relied on heavily after the basics were understood:

Perspective Made Easy by Ernest Norling
Successful Drawing by Andrew Loomis
Perspective Refresher - https://isites.harvard.edu/fs/docs/icb. ... resher.pdf
handprint: elements of perspective - http://www.handprint.com/HP/WCL/tech10.html

I do think a lot about form but the idea of what construction is, has become a little unclear as a result.
And yes, I do draw lots of boxes and cylinders.
On the cylinder, I'm wondering if there's more to it so I've been drawing those for a while now.
As for the box, I've been drawing them for a fairly long time and figured about interesting things.
They have also influenced my general studying/learning methods to be directed experimentation (from life included).
I like to follow by Vilppu's "No rules, only tools!"
Which seems to have results for me, or at least I hope I'm not deluded in thinking so.

For this post, I drew various things to maybe demonstrate.
Understanding from boxes helped when drawing, particularly space I suppose.
Perhaps I might be complicating it and a box is just a box but I dunno.
Just personal experience mine that can be wrong.
Anyways, I hope things make enough sense while I'm very tired.

I don't know what i can say in terms of critique, but I notice great progress since summer. Keep going. I only can suggest you do something more complicated and polished. Studies are good, but, I guess, it's all for cool artworks eventually. Way, from sketch to final artwork, is special experience, which is very important to get. It's also requires time for practice on par with anatomy, perspective, etc..

Thanks, hearing that I can draw cute things cheers me up.
Have been feeling tired with managing a part time job on top of school.
I have a long personal struggle with scheduling time and being a lazy ass.
I really want to get my shit together to become successful.
Love the job though since I interact with climatologists.

I'm not updating frequently and probably won't for a long time but I am continuing to draw.
Haven't forgotten that @Zipfelzeus advised the same about decreasing speed and increasing observation of human bodies.
Intended to delay this maybe a month or two for several reasons but being told a second time is enough.
I'll rearrange my backlog/curriculum immediately, paradigm shift here I come~

I actually consider the animation and sketching skills linked/same (equally bad).
It's interesting to hear one is stronger, and I'm glad it's the animation.
Regarding sketches, it's a tag for miscellaneous things so it depends on my intentions or the exercise at the time.

I'll make some comments on the sketchbook now.
Feel free to ignore any part if not applicable or relevant to one's goals.

First with colored pencils there's a tendency for every line to be softened like a crayon when making marks over time (nature of the utencil and maybe the camera makes it look softer). One might also be ghosting marks onto the paper too much instead of just doing the motion above the paper. Opinion-wise it currently seems to make drawings faded/dull rather than a stylistic choice (if that was the intention). Just sketching or as an underdrawing is normal but if it's intended to be more "final" then that might be something to be aware of from my perspective. If one desires to move away from this some things I would know of is to keep whatever utencil used sharpened, switch to ballpoint pen for a while, and/or make harder "confident" marks. A line might be dark but it can still be soft and thus more dull when it's the only kind of line lying around.

This is something one might already know, but the forms of of the ribcages/torsos completely flatten into a paper/noodle body consistently. Sometimes I can't tell whether the girls are flat chested or flat formed and there feels there's a similar issue with the pelvis but it really stems from the same issue: Form. I focused on the latest drawing although this trait appears in previous drawings that don't appear like a study involving muscles and such. Usually I would redraw for practice and demonstration but my tablet is inaccessible so here's a small modification below with my shakey mousepad which I hope gets the point across. If one desires to move away form this, there are two ways I know of. One is the straight up visual library that results from studies upon studies until finally one just naturally understands. Form my perspective this is necessary/eventual for any striving artist though for animation it is not sufficient. Which leads to the popular method that Loomis, Bridgman, Hampton, and etc. teach in different ways is which is to separate the body into a few main forms: head, ribcage, and pelvis with the gesture/spine as the blueprint. There's stuff with landmarks to help with connections but having a firm grasp on the former with the form is important first.

That should be my understanding on some issues which I hope is comprehensible.
I considered not commenting since many issues solve themselves with time but whatever.
If any information is factually wrong, let me know.
If you don't agree with anything no problem, it might just be sleepy bullshit
Anyways, exhausted time for sleep then another busy day.

Appreciate the feedback but could you clarify this seemingly contradiction. At one point you say that they are consistently flat and then you also say they aren't when they are studies. So to clarify, are you saying everything looks flat or just the personal stuff?

Woah, you did a lot of studies. I like your drawings, they are cute.

Sadly I didn't saw any finished piece in your sketchbook, you need to apply what you've learned with these studies. You can't learn without committing mistakes.

@Moe
Sorry, those are some crap sentences let me rephrase.

There appears to be an issue with the torso/rib cage forms flattening, though not everywhere.
Drawings that appear to be a study (or maybe side view) is where it occurs the least.
Otherwise front views hide it sometimes but 3/4's have a high rate.
That indicates to me that knowledge of the forms and/or the visual library has issues.
"Reoccurring" might be a better word than "consistent".
I see this as far back as the first page of the sketchbook.
Example on the 2nd page, the construction where the middle of the torso tapers to a sheet: (Torso practice.jpg Feb 28, 2016)
I've seen similar construction/gesture to indicate strong twists so there's no problem with the method itself.
I'd say a strong understanding of the forms involved is needed to make the best use of it though.
What I see emerging in the drawings is a lack of which.

Anyways, in the end no rules only tools.
There are styles and media I admire/enjoy which do have an aesthetic flatness.
My assumption is that is not the intention.

Thanks bruno, they aren't all studies but even so I don't feel like I have internalized much. Whenever I work from imagination I find myself reusing the same poses and drawing the same faces over and over again. It's frustrating but I suppose I just have to keep practicing.

Hello Moe.

It feels like a majority of your simple stand-up poses are pointed center-left. Is that your safe pose, or your default imagination pose? Might just be my imagination because it's not a heavy majority of them, but they feel different from the other ones.

I like the first landscape! I can feel the thin air. The second one has interesting shapes but the lineweight is overall confusing rather than clarifying.
[Yukio] Mishima had been asked, “What is the passion that drives you?”
He replied, “Being brought up during the war and being told at the age of 20 that everything until then had been a mistake — that’s all.”

Thanks rezz, now that you pointed it out, I do have them facing left a lot. As for the landscapes I agree with you, I've been doing mental studies of landscapes but I should probably apply that to physical practice.

No matter how much I practice, I feel that I have completely stagnated. So I decided i'm gonna work on a comic till the end of the year but before then i'll have to complete the character designs.

I used to draw a lot like you. I love Manga and Anime. The downside of this drawing style is the flatness and sloppiness of proportions(because it´s more feelish than rationalish).

To counteract this, do this:

-Study graphic shapes, especially proportions. Try to build characters straight out with shapes. NO perspective!
-Again draw straight lines and circles with a pen and build your characters systematically with shapes.
-Shape and proportion first. Perspective second

There are a lot of great graphic designs/logos on Dribbble.

I did a lot more but I reached the update maximum. I need to get out of my comfort zone with these sketches and start a project soon!
