Getting mad Dark Stalkers vibes from that tuxedo guy. A lot of your B&W stuff gives me that old 90's Capcom vibe, or I guess just manga in general. That's a good thing btw.

I think the only thing that sticks out to me right now is that your painting can get a bit too muddy in some pieces. It seems like the brush strokes and the colour temperature are just missing the mark a little. I can kind of see where you're going with it, though, so you might be able to solve it by just continuing to draw and develop it further as is.

Oh hey thanks a lot Enydimon! Capcomish styles are definitely one of my favorites haha. I agree about the muddiness. I get a bit frustrated when it happens LOL. I'll keep at it, thanks!

Out of curiosity how long did these take for you on average? I love the stories in all of these, really makes me want to push for drawings like them. Usually when inktober rolls around I get stumped on subject matter and then I get stuck in a race to finish something before the day ends. Do you post anywhere else?

I wish I had something solid to critique or give insight on aside from that. Looking forward to more stuff.

Hi Enydimon! Thanks a lot! I guess if I were to estimate an average maybe two hours? Or more.. I wish I kept track. I usually worked on multiple drawings over a few days. There were some days where I'd try to finish a few of them a day to cover for bad days when I didn't feel like drawing. Hahaha. Toward the end of inktober I was drawing them daily which I found tough. I missed a few days toward the end too but made them up after inktober ended. So yeah I cheated a little. XD

I do have a tumblr though I'm slow to post. http://arodude.tumblr.com

I gave you a follow!
The great thing about Inktober is that you technically don't have to do one every day anyhow, but that's probably a good way to handle it. It's probably better to miss a day than to just churn things out just to hit a deadline. That's something I have to be better at.

I still can't get over your scenes, they really make me want to more aggressively get away from single character easy pose pin ups. Do you have any advice for digging into that stuff or is it just the same ol' just do it and it'll suck less?

Enydimon- Thanks a lot! : D Yeah I think if you're not used to daily drawing then starting out slow and easy and gradually making it harder is best or else it can be discouraging.

I think part of it is definitely noodling around and seeing what seems to work. I think also reading tips about composition can help. I feel like researching comic paneling and reading animator tips on staging a scene can help because the point of those mediums is to tell a story clearly through a series of scenes. Maybe drawing a comic page or short storyboard can help you. I'm kind of at a loss at what else to suggest haha.

Some more sketchvembers from last November.

Yesterday my twitter feed was exploding about a comic on how anime is looked down upon in art school over here. I thought it was fascinating. I don't think I can completely fit myself in their shoes since I never went to art school but I understand the feeling on some level. Even now I feel a little out of place here when I post my stuff but I feel like the community here is welcoming of all styles so it's fine.

I think that comic also touches on the common struggle of finding your identity as an artist. Which I find tough right now. I know I don't want to aim for a super realistic style but at the same time I do find elements of realistic styles pleasing so I wonder if I would enjoy going in a more stylized direction. Well I don't know. XD Maybe the best thing is to just draw how you like and strengthen your fundamentals.

It also depends on what kind of school you go to, but it's true that a lot of them can be archaic about cartoony styles. One of my friends who went to school for illustration constantly got shit on by his teachers for being cartoony. It wouldn't have happened at an animation school, but these guys wanted to make oldschool illustrators out of them.

I also remember the pre-2010 days on conceptart.org where anime just got shitted on too. If you go even further back, they derided anything cartoony as well. It was rough back then if you didn't want to do anything like photobash-matte-painting-realistic drawing. I think it's gotten considerably better these days now. Maybe not every school is up to speed with it, but there are more places like Permanoobs and areas within the industry where we fit. The landscape has changed, not just for the big studios but also for how we consume and pay for content.

And I think it's not impossible to have several styles to work in either. Sometimes I find myself wanting to do both independently, but I think you're probably right about just drawing how you want and keeping up with fundamentals. It makes more sense to me to try to at least steer toward something you want.

Enydimon - Oh man some instructors are still so outdated huh... And I agree, it feels like styles like anime are becoming more and more mainstream now compared to like a decade ago which is pretty exciting. I hope more instructors pick up on that.

Oh man conceptart, I remember being nervous about posting anything other than realism there. I haven't checked back there much. I'm glad to hear it's gotten better.

Yeah drawing in different styles is fun. I think it can help in improving but I feel as though a lot of artists in the industry have their own recognizable style. I'd like to move toward that but I also feel like sweating about it too much won't help haha.

The last of the sketchvembers. I think the vase one is the only one I liked among all 10 pieces. It was fun making variations of vases and flowers.
