Two more still life studies from today. Learning a lot about colour and value relationships with these, especially how difficult it is to achieve high value saturated colours.

I want to start doing landscapes from life too and for now, the views from my house windows will have to do.

Hey there, cool studies! Looks like you're making quite some progress :) Do you also do personal pieces or just studies at the moment? I find just taking what you learn from studies and applying it from time to time can help solidify those ideas and sometimes lead to further realizations. Plus I'm sort of curious what subject matter you would tacle when you're painting from imagination :) Keep up the good work!

Hey KidKong, thanks for the comment. Yeah, I will eventually do some imagination stuff but for now I'm focusing on painting from life.

Today I took advantage of the overcast weather and did some landscape studies. The light was pretty cool but I didn't manage to capture it quite like it was. The drapery study was quite difficult and plan to do more of that.

The weather was even cooler today so had to sketch that. I was doodling in colour and came up with some shapes which I quite liked. Drapery is hard to pull off convincingly, especially the subsurface scatering, but it's good practice for value control.

Today I drew inspiration from a few photos I took last summer. The picture quality was so bad I had to pretty much invent my colours. Also tried some new brushes for some variety. Hope you like them.

Some more painting from my own ref. Learning how to suggest foliage a bit more efficiently and also some reflections thrown in for fun.

So today I decided to start doing some creative sketches with minimal ref using the topics from the Daily Spitpaint from Facebook. It was fun, but I really need practice doing this sort of thing, so hopefully the more I do it the easier it gets. Anyway, the topics I chose were 'Lion's Den' and 'True Collector'. The last one is some lions sketching from ref to relearn how they look.

I like your mentality on these spitpaints; the more you do, the easier it gets. I'm not really sure what the exact correlation is between effort and difficulty, but I'm very sure that the higher the effort is the lower the difficulty will become... eventually. Those armor studies are absolutely beautiful, seriously. Whatever you're doing, it looks like you're keeping up pretty well with your understanding of construction and form. Your ability to create cool ideas will strengthen as you do the spitpaints, but it would be cool to see you try some more compelling compositions. You seem to have a pretty good handle on rendering and painting, given enough time- now throwing some intense composition under that would be awesome.

Hey Rondell, thanks for the ideas, I took your advice and did some Notan exercises today. They are really cool, it reveals the backbone of the artwork. It's fun seeing how much you can imply with just black and white. Howard Pyle's Robin Hood poster is simple yet so efficient in design, I like it a lot. Did some landscapes too from photos.

The topics today were 'Fat rat' and that big ape guy thing...

Hey Vini, thanks, the still lives are really fun! I need to do a new one soon.

Today's spit paints were 'Burrowed under the snow' and 'Apple pie'. The snow piece was more exploratory, trying to arrange the simple idea into something more interesting, while the apple pie was done from ref in 30 min. The sunset was very beautiful today, a luminous green, but it only lasted like 5 min. The rest I had to paint from memory.
