Styxtastic Sketches

Postby Styxcolor » Fri Aug 05, 2016 1:24 pm

Thank you for watching.
My name is Gene, I'm 28, and your regular art-idiot-sandwich, (hopefully) constantly striving to improve.

My aim is neither getting accepted at an art school, nor making a living with my art. I'm just here for the art itself and for the development of my skills and my way of doing art. Sadly there are times in my life, when I cannot draw/practise daily, but I tell myself it's for a greater goal, so I stay determined.

I love telling stories, so I might prepare for drawing comics/illustrations for novels.

I wander on this endless road with you that is our journey of art, our kind of the journey to know ourself. I want to improve and develop and be a better person. Winter 2016 changed me much, up to now. I guess I never was as happy before, this crazy time I could draw every day and I finally began to improve. I really really hope this wasn't everything and the journey will continue.

Original text:
Okay! I'm pretty fresh here on permanoobs and I'm mostly analoguous artist, who is just beginning to learn digital art, so I'm sorry for all the painted insults for the eye in advance. At least I hope there will be a lot of normal up to some good sketches here, too :D I learned a lot with this vulture.

Unfortunately I cannot use my graphic tablet at the moment, so I have to n00b around with classical media for a while. Enjoy ^^

Hi Styxcolor. I don't think that your problem lies in painting skin but in values. The light and shadow areas in your study are all over the place.
I could recommend you to draw a nude person and squint your eyes. As you are squinting boldly decide where you have an edge of light and shadow. For now just omit all the vague shifts in value.

As to skin colours, remember that the most saturated colour are going to be in midtones, you'll get cool shadows and desaturated highlights. So I'd take down a lot of that red from his chest and arms, or make it a more desaturated if it's his complexion.
Never stop pushing : )

If I could pinpoint anything atm it would be that your structure and proportions are fairly inconsistent and could use more work. Much of your issues with anatomy in humans seems like it comes from a lack of understanding of how the body works and what the structure of the head is. You have the general knowledge of how they appear but nothing substantial enough to invent convincingly just yet. That said, the things you do get right are things that people tend to make mistakes on.

I have no idea how much you are drawing on a daily basis or how consistent it is, but I think these issues can be solved by simply drawing more and getting more mileage out.

Thank you so much for your substantial feedback, Enydimon! You pinpointed my core problem(s) and I promise to work on them. I want to develop and to become better, thank you for your critique!
Time is a difficult topic at the moment. I'm in a really time consuming non-art job training and therefore haven't much time for art, but my passion for it is too big to leave it completely. I just have to be creative how to proceed even with a really limited amount of resources at the moment.

Hm, I guess I hit a new plateau by doing all the studies, I don't like that but the only thing to get away from that is practising even more.

Merry Christmas!
Today I want to share some progress.
Things definitely got better since October, but it's not over yet. My next big projects will be values and deeper knowledge of the components a human is constructed of.

Back from christmas break!

I admit, I haven't grasped how the human body works in this crouching position (especially the legs!) but I'm working on it. Doing more poses that emphazise the legs is good for me.

Finally began to study the works of the old masters. I discovered Rubens for myself yesterday so I started with him.
I didn't expect much from me, so I'm content, but on the other hand I noticed I still have no idea about the plains of the face or have forgotten those secrets already. So I'll need to review that.

Wow...two Rubens studies and I already feel invincible *smirk*
Spontaneously started to apply my new knowledge on yesterday's sketch.
It's incredible to me, how different it looks now.
But...will also finish tomorrow, otherwise I'll fall apart. Can't eat, can't drink, have to draw into oblivion, this was my state for the last hours, now I should rest XD

My harddrive is making strange noises, so I'm uploading these before they're gone XD

I had a really rough time with the planes of the face and the result of the study isn't good at all.
Only afterwards I found out why. My usual works here in the sketchbook aren't more than they are...sketches.
I have no idea why but with the plane study I suddenly felt the urge to imitate the strict and beautiful geometric lines of the original picture...but this wasn't the point of the study. It is about planes, not about beautiful lines. I myself know my lines are still horrific, they've become better but I still need more precision practise (which I do, the results are just slow). And I shouldn't have wasted much time on soft transitions or anything. Simply not the point of it. But nevertheless I'll put it in so that especially big fails are documented as well XD

I will repeat the practise soon, but I guess I'll take one or two days off from that.

I think perhaps you worry too much about blending before laying down proper forms and shapes. You can imply a lot about forms and transitioning of them without needing to blend or much at all. If you look at a lot of old masters and traditional painting in general, a lot of them heavily focus on how they're composing the shapes of the shadows, midtones, and light.

I think if you focused on learning chiaroscuro you will have an easier time conveying those ideas and of course painting them.

@ Enydimon: Thank you so much for your feedback! I took a few days off to regain some distance from my works and my way of working/thinking that had developed during the christmas drawing raids. I guess I have typical beginners' problems as I struggle to learn my (digital) tools along with facial planes, lighting and other skills and naturally mix things up, when I want too much at the same time. I will force myself to use harder brushes in the next lighting studies. I really thought blended planes would always look better than hard edges, but they do not XD I can see that for myself now. Also thank you for mentioning Chiaroscuro. I must admit his works are not as appealing to me as those of Rubens or Rembrandt are...or secretly Caravaggio, but Chiaroscuro's lighting is incredible. I will study him. Do you have favourite pieces by him?

@ all: well, I wanted to take all time off and just drew a bit for my personal relaxation. Somehow it resulted in more than I thought. Except of all the arm studies on the right hand side the pieces are from imagination. I have no clue why I really really want to draw so many bodies at the moment. I guess I need more gesture drawing XD but at least I'm really motivated to do more and become better.
