Zipfelzeus: Thanks man! The atelier is really really good! I would never think that I could learn as much as I did in the short amount of time I was there. I learned a lot of new things so far and I also learned how much I don't know, which is good as well!

Will: Thanks! : D

Hmmm might have been just me.. Thanks btw : ))

2week figure pose and a one day portrait : )
Charcoal as always. For the figure I had a huge sheet of paper so I ended up drawing quite huge, cuz why not. It was a lot more challanging since my eyes aren't the best and I had to put in a lot more work. But it worked out alright I guess. Oh and our portrait model was amazing! He had this aura of charisma around him.

It's really fun looking through the pages of this sketchbook and seeing you progress as an artist. You have some great looking portraits in the last few pages. If you are unhappy with some of them like you seemed to say in the last post, you probably learned how to improve them at the academy. Just keep analyzing them for weak parts by flipping and squinting.Compare them to references etc. You have the skills and knowledge you need to make great portraits:)

Anders: Thanks, I just don't post the bad portraits! There's quite a few of them... But yeah the thing is just needing to practice them more, somehow full figures are so much easier..

Holy cow great improvement, the latest cast study looks fantastic. You're values are looking rad. I think you would benefit from doing more color focused studies, if possible, but I'm just blabbing things you already know. Haha.

I need to overcome the fear of people seeing my things when they are not the level of my best work.. I don't know how I developed this, but it happened throughout the year. So... Here is a shitty failed portrait that turned out disastrous. ( from life again ). I am so sorry to my dear fellow student on how this turned out..

This is the only place I will ever post this.

It's a muscovy soldier from the 15th century. The design is highly referenced from Angus Mcbrides historical illustrations and then I used several material references for everything.

Heyy. You are probably already far ahead in this picture and I don't really have an issues with the costumes. It looks atleast very authentic to me.

I was wondering.... something seemed off and I think his legs might be a bit to short. The position of legs and feet seem slightly off but when I tried to reconstruct it I noticed how difficult it is to get the walk cycle to look natural :(.

If I'd offer one suggestion is to use the shield to make an overall more interesting silhouette at the moment it's just clinging to him like a little blue surfboard. I think there would be a lot of ways to enhance to overall read of the character if the shield was in a different position but don't take my suggestion I'm not really sure one would hold a shield like that I just wanted to illustrate my point.

Very nice work on the textures though!

Zipfelzeus: Hmmm you are completeley right! The weird thing is that the legs are actually not too short. I am going to try to make it work somehow. Thanks a lot for your redline, it is very helpful and I appreciate it a lot that you did it! I haven't worked further on the painting yet but I'll do it soon!
Also thank you for the shield suggestion, I'm gonna see what I can do : D!

Nice updates kris, how are you? Enjoying the summer? Off to Norway soon? ^^

I like what you're doing in the latest sketches. Great exercise for practicing how well certain things read with only a flat dark tone, and places where you refuse to even show a line. The woman on the left especially, really like that one. I'm a little confused however on the weight is distributed on the guy to the right.

Hope you're well, take care. :) See ya soon!

Axel: Thanks! Ehmm it's a way I'm trying to simplify with. If a drawing of painting reads well in 2 values it will read when rendered too. But I've also seen some artists make whole drawings like this and I think it looks very cool. Marko has some cool drawings like this http://marko-djurdjevic.deviantart.com/ ... -513922638

William: Hey! Thaanks : D, Summer is great and I'm in Norway right now, it's really nice here! How are you and how's your summer?
Oh that guy on the right, I gave up on him because I'm way too lazy~

I finished this painting, it was really difficult, but I learned a lot from it.

That soldier came out really nice! The feet position feels much more natural than before. Sorry my critique was a bit messy, sometimes I'm a bit under time pressure but I still want help and comment on people work.

But cool that it worked out!

Zipfelzeus: Thanks a lot! And your redline did help! : )

Color studies from reference.. I liked how one of them looks like on the original size even though I painted it zoomed out as thumbnail.
I do still find it very difficult to paint anything but I feel like half-way I learned what works for me with these..

Katherine: Thank you! That makes me very happy! I do procrastinate a looooooot though : O

I had this most terrible idea ever and quit this painting as soon as I realized how dumb it was hahahahaha gosh... So ehhh its a sketch now? It was a goblin forcing the ladies to play instruments with him while he is really bad at playing music and his goblin friends don't want to play music with him because of that. Yes that was my idea.

this armor would not be useful but I want to paint it. I do not accept anyone telling me a dress-armor would not be good in a real combat situation.

Pie: Thanks!! : D

Wip, I'm going to challange myself on making it look as real as I can again. I feel like I'm getting closer and closer. Gonna add some light on the grass, work more on the skulls and candles, make the branches take less attention, there's just so much to do! I want to try making more complicated paintings slowly, just every new painting being more complicated than the previous one and also more real and believable.

Great work. Some crit on your recent piece.

-I would render way more falloff on those candles under her feet as they are unnecessary hotspots.
-The tree branches can recede/fade out more for more depth. Don't forget to make some blurrier since things farther away lose sharpness, particularly at night.
-I would simplify that back lighting and just put the moon behind her head.
-Vary the proportions and shapes of those trees. They're too similar.
-Reduce the amount of tree branches. It's too busy.
-Her face can use some rim lighting and stronger lighting from underneath.
-I would make the skulls/candles have less detail since we're not looking there. A touch of fog would also help.

Thanks! I did a few of those things! But most of the changes I made to simplify was mostly making all the details a lot more subtle to make them draw less attention, I love having subtle details = X.
