quick photostudy, I liked her face so I wanted to remember it in my visual library, maybe I'll use it as reference at some point?

Really cool that you're doing Wheel of Time characters. The Moiraine painting is looking great! I read those books obsessively in my teens. I was so bummed out when Robert Jordan died before finishing the series:>

I really like the Moiraine painting, as I said. The gesture, character design and composition is working really well. I think it could use a little more contrast though. I tried making some quick adjustments to it in Photoshop to show you what I mean:
MoiraineContrast.jpg
MoiraineContrast.jpg (297.57 KiB) Viewed 2260 times

In the example I especially increased the contrast around her face and decreased it towards the edges of the painting. Smudged the background a bit to make the character stand out more.I also added some quick ambient occlusion shadows close to her face to further increase the contrast in that area.

That said, I'm really liking all your portrait work, they're very lovely.
I'm a fan of your illustrations too, you got the colors/values down well. Thanks for the GIF, always like to see artist's process :)

good stuff. Don't ignore the necks though I can see you skipping neck training.
It just looks very awkward when you have a ripped body and then a pencil neck. jokes

You please have to teach me how to do patterns and get that texture of the fabrics

Not sure if sketchbooks are for praise only but I say the last painting the face is flat, there's a sharp light edge that makes it pop instead of recede (why did you add that?).

Meanwhile blurry backgrounds generally appear flat , maybe even like a poster! (because most of the time it's not correctly done, and there's no cure for overblur) I don't know why you chose these things but it'd be better to avoid that.

But I'm just a fish.

Anders: I am not really far yet, just finished Fires of Heaven, I started listening to the audiobooks while working on my casts at the atelier and listen to them most of the time that I'm drawing or painting, it feels lazy to say that, but if I would read I would have less time painting? Also the people who are reading them out loud are great.

Thanks for the retouching, man I wish I knew I should do more blur and a bit more contrast earlier, thanks a lot for doing this really! I will remember it for the next time!

Shamandelie: Thanks so much! This is encouraging me a lot! But I don't have that much work in my sketchbook! Haven't been posting so much in the past year due to feeling insecure and the atelier works taking a lot of time.

Antenn0: Thanks! What do you mean by my necks though? I know I'm not great at them but I don't think I give buff people pencil necks? If you can show me what you mean it would be very helpful :).

About patterns, it's veryyyy easy, have you ever used to warp tool in photoshop? the trick it to take a pattern, paste it where you want it to and just warp the texture around the form, you can also use a little bit of liquify and paint over the pattern afterwards to add some shadows and lighter parts. If you need help with it I can maybe show it in a hangout?

Peach: I-I hope! Still not enough though!!

Excited for that painting you're speaking of. :)

Are those traditional environment sketches you got going on from life here in Simrishamn? You should join us for portrait btw! Many people are showing up, and Hans and Sanna are even hiring a model to pose for us, so we don't have to do it every time. :D

I never saw your reply, so sorry! But yes, definitely a real hangout as well. We could go grab a pizza or something, sketch and hang out! Would like to see your new place too :)

EDIT I just saw that you wrote Simrishamn and Bergen on two of them, silly me!

Oh oh that latest piece look like a real challenge! Painting dark skin can be really tricky since it has a bit of a different gloss. Also kudos for trying to give him a distinct face expression, that's not easy either! Since I'm nitpick Mcgee there is probably a lot I could pick out but I much more impressed that you went through the challenge and finished it!

Here is one thing though I'd like to point out because it might be essential. You went for an almost monochromatic color pallette here and I saw that you places his dark upper body again the white dresses... but something about the contrast as whole just doesn't work out to set the figure into the focus. If you ever have a similar piece. Why not try to use values or colors to create stronger contrasts in focus areas.

That's all though for now. Great work!

Great work. Not much crit, you're clearly on your way! Small nitpicking: I know you said it's done but for your recent piece I think it's bit too mechanical that all the bg people are the same heights. I also think to help a bit with depth and composition would be to have them standing in a circle, so in this case they'd be forming a slight u pointing towards the focal. Instead they all form a straight line which is a bit unnatural. I can't paint for the life of me. Keep rocking!

Zeus: Welll the biggest problem was that I did not think enough if it was smart to paint this piece in general, it ended up being like painting a white snowy landscape with everything covered in snow syndrome. Dark skinned people in a dark clouded environment.. : D I feel like I learned more of what not to do than what to do from the piece.. I tried adding contrast with the wetness of the rain, which gave an effect of everything looking like spoodge = /
Thanks for pointing it out though :)!

Crankshaft: Thank man, you are completely right about this! And you can paint! Practice! Keep rocking as well !

Coconut: I want to continue but had to take a year off : ((, Thanks! Keep up the effort too!!

I think the trouble with the table is that the pole holding it up isn't centered correctly. It's almost slanted toward one side. If you extend the bottom of the canvas just to sort out the perspective in relation to the chair, book shelf, and table, you'll have an easier time figuring out what's wrong with the placement. I have a feeling all three of those objects might not be aligned correctly.

Sorry to hear you had to take the year off from the atelier, but it's good to see your posts!

hi Kristina,
if the flower vase is in the center of the table (which seems to be what you have implied) then the vertical part of the table's bottom (the table leg/stand/not sure what else to call it) would just line up with it, as if you could draw an imaginary line that went through them both perfectly. find where that line hits your ground plane and draw the circular base there.

hope that helps

I did quick little sketches so the thing is the closer you are to an object the less parelel perspective gets. You always have 3 points of perspective with things that are like.. threedimensional. Sometimes more sometimes less.
For example when you draw a cube if you draw it from close up you have extreme perspective no matter what side, and when it's father away the lines are more parallel. You can suggest distance that way.

Yeh to explain the changes. I made it clear that there are vanishing points and also put her in the middle in the chair. I increased the distance from the couch to the wall so that there's enough space for the image that is hanging directly above to make clear that that space can hold both a small table and a thing to hold books.

Fish: I understand what you mean, I just didn't want to force it, I feel like the piece as a whole looks a lot more peaceful like this, I want to try still making the distance between the wall and chair more, somehow : P. Thanks for the sketches, it is too much to change right now but it is interesting to see what you would have done with it!

Some sketches I didn't post and some that were recent.
