Character of the Week 01: The Restorer

Postby algenpfleger » Wed Apr 16, 2014 9:41 am

As with all things on here, no time for talk, let's just do it!

Character of the Week 01: The Restorer

Finals thread opens: Saturday, April 26th
Voting begins: Sunday, April 27th

The topic has no relation whatsoever to the nature of the forum :DD The fact that the first challenge in this place would be related to a topic like this has no significance and is purely accidental :DDDDD

"A conservator is a professional who works on the cultural conservation of objects."

Sketches and steps must be saved and posted to be eligible for voting! Remember, we all want to learn!

Good luck and have fun! <3

Do we have to do it digitally or we could also traditionally?

So Restorer can be anything, as long as we can relate it to the word somehow, right?

Are we allowed to post step by step or is it just a masterpost with all our steps with the finished piece in one post?

Beruang. I think you can do both but remember to post steps in your final post so that it's easier for the person who has to moderate :)
I'll probably just post steps together with my final and make it easier for everyone to view.

Victoria! Both are fine!

Even, that's right! :D Be creative and such

Beruang, post as many in between things as you want! Others will be able to give you feedback during the process that way :3

Chris, exactly, thanks for the help *_*

CHOW draft 1 - Scienspider

Postby ATP » Fri Apr 18, 2014 12:03 am

Took a crack at it. I'm not going to post up sketches so as to avoid cluttering the thread, but here's development of one idea.

Additionally, I wasn't too sure about the thrust of the challenge - whether to do a "restorer" character like some kind of healer, or a "conservator" like a collector of some kind. I went for a conservator in this case, some kind of science-fiction-y character.

Additionally, sorry about the spatter on the image - that's the fault of my scanning image plate. I'll see to replacing that as I get money available.

CHOW draft 2 - Restorer

Postby ATP » Fri Apr 18, 2014 2:07 am

Here's my second one. I'm not sure if I'm doing this correctly - am I meant to post all of the images, like thumbs and everything, or just post main stages as I go along?

Here's a sketch, went on a post apo mutated humanoid concept :

ATP : Both sketchs are nice, though the point of view on the second one is a bit boring, makes it way to static.
Zipfelzeus : Really nice concept !
Guppy : Both nice, but I think I prefere the one on the right

Dope looking stuff in here! Very inspiring!
Here's my idea of a fantasy exorcist (he restores the possessed back to their regular self).
I'm not sure the best way to get reference for up-lighting on his robe though. Any ideas would help a lot.

Seeing all your ideas is so inspiring. Looking forward to seeing what you guys can come with.

Went through a few ideas before settling on a temple priestess. She has to maintain the mummified bodies of the heroes and kings by cleaning them and painting their faces with what's essentially make-up, restoring and preserving their image. This is a rough concept. Will probably do a full bodied costume sketch after I get some sleep.

ATP, wow these are crazy ideas! your imagination is wild. don't forget to, when you're doing the actual image, communicate to the viewer the role of a character - a cool design alone isn't much use if the audience has no idea what's actually going on.

Zipfelzeus, I'm getting a slight Maya-ish vibe from these which I think is so cool. The costume right now is not much more than a mask, ripped boxers and shoulderpads though - try to expand on that! Does he use tools for his work? Carry things? Maybe he has some skin painting or tattoos that distinguish him from the normal doods in his tribe. Communicate his back story a little bit this way!

Guppy, these are crazy and alien! Nice and simple! Can't say a lot more at this stage

Mark, damn nice drawing! I love that you can already tell that this guy is in the business of restoring things. Curious to see how you develop this into a painting!

jeremy! awesome interpretation of the topic! try designing a bit more than this giant robe though! make it interesting! if it helps, maybe do a line drawing first where you concentrate on what things you will actually paint, before you jump into that

chazillah, thumbs are looking great (unlike your face) gg on the costume development. don't forget to communicate what the actual character is and does though! (and to lose weight)

beruang, that is a fantastic idea. i absolutely adore the story you came up with. please go on with it!

Thanks Hannes, here's more exploration. I'm going to take this now and start exploring secondary details within the character, then some color options.

So here's still a WIP, I'm gonna add details, objects, small satchels, etc. I'll probably remove his tattoo on his arm to make a better one, and also add some others here and there.

Thanks Hannes ! :)

so what exactly is the final product? A character sheet, an illustration, or the character without any background?

Guppy, all of those work, but of course if you show your character doing something or in a situation related to what they are and do (meaning, a simple illustration with them as the focus) you add a lot of depth - a character is more than an outfit after all, it's also a story, a personality, all of which also show more colors in relationship to the world arround him. for example, a space travelling pilot might be the most commonplace thing in a future world set in space, but he/she might be worshipped like a god by a bunch of south american natives where he crashlanded by accident - a character's place in the world they inhabit is part of the design, so if you show that, you add a lot.

More exploration, still unsure what I want to go with. It sucks being so indecisive; I should stick with one design and expand upon it.

Quick question:

If we decide to take a more illustrative approach rather than a character sheet, is there a minimum amount of the character that must be visible? I ask because one of my thumbs obstructs the character from the waist down.

Kicking around some ideas - first is a pretty obvious nurse idea, but I'm going to go with this scraggly dude and work out some cyberpunk hacker type, restoring access to some megacorp mainframe or something :D

This is as far as I feel comfortable going on the character at this level, any feedback on how to push it further would be helpful (even though this is a contest lol)

Here's a rough sketch of a druid like character. With this sketch I'm trying to incorporate organic/natural design elements to create some sort of narrative. Hopefully I can evolve this within the next couple of days. Will update.
