CHALLENGE 14: Halloween!

CHALLENGE 14: Halloween!

Postby chazillah » Sat Oct 17, 2015 9:05 pm

The Pumpkin Queen

▬ Deadline: Monday, October 31st, midnight PST. (UTC -8hrs)

▬ Type: Illustration or character design

▬ Size: Any (no requirement)

▬ Brief: Create your version of The Pumpkin Queen...or king, if you prefer. Just kidding, paint anything related to Halloween or autumn. No limits, except it should obviously be Halloween related!

▬ Requirements:
1. Studies and anything else relating to your illustration must be posted!
2. The final illustration must be posted in the finals thread along with your studies.

▬ Suggestions:
* Please include your studies! You should be learning everything you can. Fold studies, skintones, lighting, environments, perspective, composition, materials, etc! The more you study, the more you’ll improve and the stronger your final illustration will be.

* It's also highly encouraged that you think of some storytelling behind your illustration. You may even write up a paragraph to go along with the illustration or focus on the character.

Coool!
I want to try something with an atmosphere and materials similar to ''The nightmare before Christmas'' - so I'm going to be studying a lot of movie stills. Hopefully.
The designs in it are also really cool so I'm going to be taking inspiration for my character too.

Did this sketchy wip. You said queen or king and i thought it was a good chance to paint a non cis person. not really in it to win it with the studies and planning an all that just wanna participate and have fun hopefully that's okay :)

Thewalkingbar – That study looks awesome, I’m excited to see your ideas for this one.
Caleb-Brown – the wip looks good; it’s great you’re participating. I think that’s a really good take on the challenge :)

It’s to see a bit more of a turn out :) I may give this one a go as well.

Yeah I don't want to limit the subject matter. Let's just make it anything Halloween related!

Hey, I'm glad to see more participation in this challenge! I really should have submitted sketches earlier to the previous one, so I'll do my best now to make up for that. Here are some basic composition sketches, I'm still debating which one to tackle based on the limited amount of time I can spend working on this illustration, as well as my current focus in my classes on pure portraiture and facial anatomy. I'll make a decision tomorrow and post a full-scale rough though.

Cool thumbnails Aestechnics! I like the third one where she's holding the pumpkin.
Also good looking face lighting setups Memy!

Well I'm kind of lost what I'm gonna be doing with the background. I think the moon on the back isn't really working because the character would have to be really dark. Or then I have to make up a second light source and make light coming from front as well hmm. I think I have to make some more thumbnails and studies.

Just gonna leave this here, sorry it’s not too great. I didn’t plan enough! I attempted to perspective for one as well, still pretty screwy looking but I don’t have enough time to obsess haha.

Of course, as I expanded into the full sketch I ran into a ton of anatomy issues. Even though the figure will eventually be fully costumed, I figure it's better to go battle these anatomy issues first and foremost to build a knowledge base for later and get the most out of studying for this illustration (even though I'm pretty sure this may not be the best way to finish on time...).

The power of applying more studies :D Still a long ways to go in terms of my anatomy but I'll move on to hand / head studies as well as costuming now.

As you can see by the timestamp on this post, I definitely didn't finish by the deadline. Probably should have just put my nose to the grindstone painting the whole day, but I diverted a lot of extra time for studies, ref gathering, etc. Still learned a lot and I'll finish this painting up in the next few days and post it to my SB I suppose. One day I'll finish a challenge piece on time!
